- Abstract
The study presented in this article aimed to examine the link between language elements found in the metalinguistic reflections of French speaking learners of English as a second language (L2) and grammatical elements in their written production. Researchers such as Armand (2000), Roulet (1995) and Swain (1995), to name a few, argue that metalinguistic reflection, when it occurs in language class promotes language development. Some have empirically verified the link, on the one hand, between metalinguistic reflection and acquisition of L2 (e.g., Renou, 2001; Simard, French, & Fortier, 2007) and, on the other hand, between metalinguistic reflection and oral production (e.g., Griggs, 1997; Huot, 2000). However, none has examined the link between the object of metalinguistic reflection of L2 learners and the grammatical elements they use in their written productions. This is precisely what we attempted in this study. Twenty-seven grade six students (n= 27, Mean age= 11.4) from an intact English L2 class who received approximately 350 hours of teaching using a communicative approach participated in the study. Metalinguistic reflection was operationalized through verbalizations about the L2 in a journal that was completed over a period of three months. The written productions were collected after a pretest and an immediate post-test using a narrative task with images. Test results indicate only a partial link between grammatical elements mentioned in the metalinguistic reflections and those found in the written productions of the participants.
