- Abstract
The article offers information on the relationship between the center population and the ethnically diverse periphery in Russia. It notes that nineteenth-century plays an important role in the process while witnessing the improvement of the ethnonational awareness among Russians as well as non-Russians. The article also investigates the Komi people and the image of Komi in the nineteenth century and compares it to some other ethnic stereotypes circulating at the time among literate Russians in order to reveal connectedness between ethnic stereotypes and ethnic social policies.
