The article presents the author's insights on the ancient fish sauce and its residues in archaeology. It discusses the three varieties of ancient fish sauce such as the black and bloody garum, the whole-fish sauce liquamen, and the brine or pickle muria. Also discussed the comparison between garum and liquamen, the origin of the sauce, and the Ishiri traditional Japanese fish sauce.
