Comforting sentences from the warming room at Inchcolm abbey.
- Authors

- Abstract
The authors offer insights into the painted wall inscriptions found in the warming room at Inchcolm abbey on the island of Inchcolm, Scotland. The Gothic-textura lettering relates four sentences offering wisdom and advice, typical Latin religious maxims of the Medieval period. The incomplete nature of the inscriptions arising from age and weather are considered, with translations of all four sentences presented. The authors argue that all the phrases appeared in a popular Medieval text compiled by Thomas of Ireland at Paris, France in 1306 entitled "Manipulus florum" (The Bouquet of Flowers).
