- Abstract
The management of an appendiceal mass remains controversial with 2 schools of thought; early surgical intervention versus non-operative management with or without interval appendicectomy. The aim of this prospective study is to determine the role and safety of early laparoscopic appendicectomy (LA) in children with acute appendicitis presenting with an appendiceal mass. Between May to October 2003, LA was attempted in 88 consecutive pediatric patients with suspected appendicitis including 22 patients who presented with an appendiceal mass. All the operations were performed by the register or consultant pediatric surgeon on-duty on the day of patients' admission.
