- Abstract
What drives people to live in society is that certain needs can be met more easily together. Human beings, who generate new needs as their needs are met and whose needs are constantly changing, have to produce in order to meet their new and various needs. The phenomenon of production is a phenomenon that needs to be handled on its own. Changing production under the influence of various factors leads to the emergence of new needs. Likewise, the perception of need for human beings also changes under the influence of various factors. While 'need' in pre-industrial societies relatively characterized the commodities and conditions necessary to sustain human life, with industrialization and in post-industrial societies, the perception of 'need' has gone beyond basic vital factors. With industrialization, production started to be carried out through machines and weakened the need for manual labor. This has given a new impetus to the phenomenon of production and consumption. While the needs that are essential for people to sustain their lives and that fully meet the meaning of the concept of 'need' are examined under the title of need-based consumption, the type of consumption that is formed as a result of the developing and changing phenomena following industrialization, which reduces the purchase to objects and symbols, has begun to be named as indicator / ostentatious consumption. Display-induced consumption generally means a tendency to consume at an excessive level, which is thought to arise from the state of need, and which is essentially intended to be made visible in social and social areas. The sociological and psychological contexts that make people think that they are consuming out of need, despite the fact that they tend to consume based on signs, contain a plane that must be examined in sign-induced consumption. The said misconception has become unrecognizable/invisible with the belief that the individual is happy as he/she consumes. In this study, considering the fact that consumption patterns affect and determine lifestyles to a great extent, the reasons for indicator-based consumption will be discussed in the context of the individual-society relationship and the fact that some needs are determined and directed will be supported by various sources and arguments.
