- Abstract
This trial was to study the effects of dietary crude fiber on the growth performance and back fat thickness of minipigs. A total of 24 Lan-Yu pigs were selected and assigned to three treatments. Basal diet is formulated by the United States miniature pig formula (USDA 1160) containing 5% alfalfa. Wheat bran was applied 10% or 10% in treatments. Experiment was conducted from 9 to 25 kg of pigs. Growth performance, the back fat thickness and blood profiles were measured. Results indicated there were no difference in growth performance and the change of backfat thickness amongst treatments. Pigs fed with 20% dietary wheat bran had higher (P < 0.05) creatinine than the control pigs while the control pigs had higher (P < 0.05) triglyceride than the pig fed with 20% dietary wheat bran at the 6th week and the end of the trial. Other blood profiles were not different amongst treatments. In summary, wheat bran could substitute the alfalfa as a fiber source of ingredient for minipigs.
