- Abstract
Objective: In this study, it was aimed to determine the body conditions and affecting factors of Karayaka sheep during the period of ram joining, 50th day of pregnancy and 3rd month after birth. Materials and Methods: The animal material of the research consisted of 110 Karayaka sheep raised in a private farm. Body condition scoring data were used for the determination of body reserves at different periods, during the period of ram joining, the 50th day of pregnancy, and the 3rd month after birth. Results: The correlation coefficients between the body condition scores of the 3 periods were calculated as 0.315, 0.342 and 0.408, respectively, and were found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). The moderately correlated 3-period body condition scores were positively correlated with each other and while one increased, the other also increased. A decrease in body condition was observed with increasing age in sheep. The average body condition of the herd was found to be 3.26 in the period of ram joining, 4.34 in the 50th day of pregnancy and 3.63 in the 3rd month after birth. Conclusion: Body condition scoring of Karayaka sheep at different periods under breeder's conditions is similar to literature reports. In the study, body reserves of sheep at different periods were tried to be determined by body condition scoring. This method will ensure that nutritional deficiencies can be easily detected by the breeder.
