- Title
An Emotional Control Card for Inappropriate and Appropriate Emotions in Using Rational-Emotive Imagery.
- Authors
Ellis, Albert
- Abstract
In this article the author suggests a revision of the emotional control card (ECC) technique of psychotherapy. They have assumed that in rational emotive therapy (RET) one tries to help clients change intense feelings, such as severe anger, humiliation, helplessness, and depression, to milder intensities of these same feelings. This is not exactly so. RET is perhaps the only mode of psychotherapy in which even mild feelings are inappropriate and that they can be fairly clearly distinguished from appropriate or non-distinguished feelings. RET does not usually encourage clients to change the intensity but the quality of their feelings. It holds that very intense feelings are often quite appropriate and healthy. It merely tries to help people change or surrender their disruptive or self-defeating feelings. According to the author if the ECC technique is used in its present form using it will help many people. If its revised more in line with RET Theory it will prove more beneficial.
