- Abstract
The teacher career is an instrument to recognize the merits in the teachers' professional development. This means attending to the improvement of their cognitive abilities and their reflective-practical competence in order to motivate them to accomplish their duties, reinforce their compromise with education and fairly acknowledge the value of the best professionals. From a strictly educational point of view, the teacher career must aim to improve the teaching practices which promote learning improvement. This aim requires specifying the criteria to determine what is understood by good teaching practice as well as determining the criteria for its assessment. The complexity of teaching requires adequate methodologies to tackle processes of a qualitative nature. The regulation of a teaching career must overcome the easy quantitativism of methods, the bureaucratic regulation of the quality levels, and consider a number of incentives other than the salary.
