- Abstract
General anesthesia is the most complex form of anesthesia. The American Society of Anesthesiology defines general anesthesia as a drug-induced loss of consciousness during which patients are unresponsive to painful stimulation. Both in induction and in maintenance, hypnotics, opioids, muscle relaxants are used. Hypnosis is achieved by the administration of anesthetic agents, either intravenously or by inhalation, or in combination. The ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) classification is a simple way to describe the condition of the patient who will undergo a surgical intervention with anesthesia, the purpose of which is to evaluate the patient’s pre-anesthesia medical comorbidities. Despite the fact that general anesthesia is a safe way to ensure comfort during surgery, there may still be complications that must be recognized such as: anaphylaxis, respiratory and cardiovascular complications, hypothermia, awareness, nausea and vomiting in the postoperative period, ocular injuries and peripheral nerves lesions.
