- Abstract
Objective: To describe and to analyze intensity levels, duration and energy expenditure in a non-conventional program of physical education classes focused in sportive practices in schoolchildren. Methods: Case study: physical education program at Instituto Estadual de Educação Vasconcelos Jardim School, RS, Brazil. 206 schoolchildren (112 boys and 94 girls) were randomly selected and assessed at 72 classes using GPS GARMIN, 310XT model, with frequency meter. The intensity of physical activity (PA) was categorized according to Armostrong (1998) criteria. Descriptive statistics was used to identify time ratio in the different PA levels; T Student test was used for comparisons between genders and ANOVA with Bonferroni post hoc test to comparisons between categories. Results indicated differences between boys and girls. Boys average time in vigorous PA increases throughout ages. However girls reduce the average time in this PA level throughout the ages. Evaluating the sum of moderate and vigorous PA levels it is observed that the average time is similar among genders. Conclusion: In this physical education program, boys and girls played moderate and vigorous PA levels around 2/3 of the class time, as recommended to the health promotion.
