- Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease that affects multiple organs and predominates in young women. The initial manifestation of disease after 50 years of age - late onset lupus - is rare and there is an increase in the proportion of affected men. In these cases the clinical course is insidious, with characteristics different from this disease in young people. In addition, comorbidities common to the age group of the elderly make it difficult to establish the diagnosis at an early stage. A 75-year-old man who had onset of lupus with psychosis at age 60 is described, which progressed with rapidly progressive nephritis treated with corticosteroid and cyclophosphamide. Increased longevity in the population may favor a growing number of this modality of lupus; therefore, case studies may contribute to enhance the index of clinical suspicion.
