- Title
The Evolution of Death and Dying Controversies.
- Authors
VEATCH, ROBERT M.
- Abstract
An essay about the evolution of death and other related issues is presented. One of the issues in 1970 was the definition of death, which led to debates on whether death was a process or a momentary event. It analyzes Henry Beecher's argument stating that a brain's failure makes an individual dead. The ethics of forgoing life support was the second major issue taken up by The Hastings Center in its early years. Also discussed is the moral right of competent patients to refuse medical interventions.
