Abstract
An essay is presented which criticizes ethnographer Clifford Geertz's writings on the workings of power and history in Morocco. Topics include Geertz's book "Works and Lives" and insights on patriarchy and patronage. Details related to Moroccan conceptions of the Arabic term for personal sincerity and truthfulness, ṣedq, are also presented.
