- Abstract
Grandparenthood is a significant social role. Positive relations between children and grandchildren make the elderly individuals have a tie with life. Grandparents have a significant place in the life of a child. In general, a grandchild is a source of pride for them. They behave compassionately to them. It is a great pleasure to experience the memories they had with their children once again with the grandchildren. In this context, it was aimed to investigate the views of elderly individuals over the interaction between the elderly and children. A total of randomly chosen 300 elderly individuals living in Ankara and having a grandchild were included in the study. The data of the research were collected through "Question Form" that was prepared by the researchers, aiming at the evaluation of the views of the elderly people over elderly and child interaction. The views of elderly individuals over the positive and negative points of elderly and child interaction were analysed through t test and analysis of variance (ANOVA). At the end of the research, it was found with regard to the views of the elderly people over elderly and child interaction that the item of "I like to spoil my grandchildren" was affected by gender status while that of "I like buying gifts for my grandchildren" was affected by the status of education. It was also found that the expressions of "I am happy about being with my grandchildren", "My grandchildren are meeting my social needs" and "I willingly look after my grandchildren when they become ill" varied depending on marital status. The views of elderly individuals regarding the negative sides of child and elderly interaction in the expression of "They regard me someone who is illiterate and unaware of what's going on" had an effect on educational status. It was determined that the expressions of "I have a generation gap with my grandchildren", "Looking after children is a trouble for me" and "They regard me someone who is illiterate and unaware of what's going on" were affected by marital status and married elderly individuals thought more negatively compared to widows. It was found that there was a significant difference in the expressions of "My grandchildren spend all of my money", "They never listen to me" and "They are envy about my relation with other children", and that the significant difference was observed between both married and widows, and married and separated couples.
