- Title
Screening and active surveillance in prostate cancer: the dilemma continues.
- Authors
Hamdy, Freddie C.; Albertsen, Peter C.; Donovan, Jenny L.
- Abstract
The article discusses the ongoing debate surrounding the value of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening for prostate cancer. While some studies have shown a decline in prostate cancer mortality with the use of PSA testing, there are concerns about overdiagnosis and overtreatment. The authors challenge the argument that all men diagnosed with screen-detected prostate cancer should be placed under active surveillance, emphasizing the importance of early radical treatments for high-risk disease. They also highlight the need for better risk stratification to minimize unnecessary diagnoses and overtreatment. The article concludes by emphasizing the impact of an unnecessary cancer diagnosis on quality of life and the importance of offering necessary treatments to those at risk of succumbing to prostate cancer.
