- Abstract
After its establishment, the Republic of Turkey focused on villages and villagers, like any other field, and made various efforts for their prosperity. One of those efforts was revising the curriculum of village schools. The physical training course (gymnastics), which we did not see in the curriculum of village schools before, started to be added to the curriculum as a separate course slowly. On the days when the schools were open, 20-minute physical training lessons were held in the morning accompanied by music. However, students were made to do simple warm-up exercises, and this prevented the physical training (gymnastics) lessons from passing efficiently for the students in the village schools due to the fact that the time was too short. In contrast, schools focused on agriculture and handicraft courses, which were more suitable for village life. The first of the two important sources of the content of the physical training (gymnastics) course in the village schools of the period in question was written by Selim Sırrı (Tarcan), one of the most important names in Turkish sports, and the other by Fuat Pura, a physical training teacher. However, it is understood that unity could not be achieved due to the fact the topics they addressed in their books were almost different from each other. The physical training course in village schools never reached its goal during the aforementioned period.
