- Abstract
The author discusses the Jewish concept of kavvanah, or the holy attention due to all encountered by the devout. Customs of reciting blessings, the existence of specific blessings for various tasks, objects, and events, and the importance of recognizing meaning in the world are examined. Particular focus is given to poetry which focuses on blessings found in ordinary things. The search for meaning in the ugly, the tragic, and the horrific is also explored and the importance of finding hope and beauty among the difficult is discussed.
