- Abstract
A critique is presented of poems such as "To Maecenas," "On Being Brought From Africa to America," and "An Hymn to Humanity" by African American poet Phillis Wheatley, who was manumitted in 1774. Wheatley's influence from ancient Greek poems such as "Iliad" by Homer are discussed, as well as racist criticism of her work. Wheatley's experiences being captured in Africa for slavery in America, her religious themes, and her social conditions are also discussed.poetry.
