- Abstract
Introduction and Objective: Maxillofacial trauma has been identified as a public health problem in different countries. It leads to different problems such as functional, esthetic and vital. The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence of maxillofacial trauma occurring in people from Nariño, Colombia. Materials and Methods: Data were obtained at three hospitals and one institution from Nariño between 2001 and 2006. Maxillofacial trauma diagnosis was defined according to the International Classification of Diseases codes (CIE-10). The information collected included demographic variables, causes and anatomic distribution. Results: There were epidemiological changes in relation to maxillofacial trauma from 2001 to 2006; in 2001 12.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants presented this trauma while 18.9 cases were observed in 2004. The highest frequency of injuries occurred in the 15-24 year old group. Regarding sex, males were more affected than females (4:1). 42.2% of injuries were due to violence and 17.8% to motorcycle crashes. The mandible was the most common fractured bone (23%). Conclusions: Maxillofacial trauma was observed in young people. Violence was considered the main cause of this trauma. A new analysis may be important taking into account socioeconomic status.
