- Authors
Menary, Richard
- Abstract
The article discusses about Stephen Davies book and presents comments on the book highlighting important themes, views on the evolution of art, art as an adaptation or as a technology and accounts of aesthetic niche with neutral circuitry adapted to non-aesthetic functions. The article also discusses about being mutually influenced by biology and culture, and warns against thinking of art simply as a technology that is independent from our biological nature. Also discussed is the behavioural and developmental plasticity of humans, where the human learning environments can be transformed by the inherited cultural capital. The arguments laid down by Davies is appreciated, with an urge to think of the evolution of art as a co-evolution of biological capacities with culture thus providing more accurate account of how aesthetic traits have evolved.
