- Title
Tramps and Trade Union Travelers: Internal Migration and Organized Labor in Gilded Age America, 1870–1900 by Kim Moody (review).
- Authors
Pearson, Chad
- Abstract
Before outlining the dimensions of this "perfect storm", Moody makes a convincing case that late nineteenth-century workers were, in fact, class conscious. Most originally, Moody illustrates the ways labor's migratory practices prevented many from developing enduring relationships, including the establishment of independent political parties based on shared class interests. Unlike others, Moody has not succumbed to the belief, popular in many academic and trade union circles, that liberal establishment forces, especially the Democratic Party, will meaningfully challenge the ruling class and champion workers' interests.
