- Abstract
The aim of this study is to understand how Fairtrade certification mechanisms influence on the organizational design of cooperatives as hybrid organizations. Based on organizational hybridism as a theoretical basis, the study is guided by the contributions of interpretive management scholars who consider cooperatives as hybrid social organizations. This investigation is structured as a qualitative, exploratory research, carried out from a case study in a Fairtrade coffee growers cooperative in Espírito Santo. As a data collection instrument, the triangulation of techniques was used, through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation and documents, analyzed through content analysis. The main results pointed to the need to forge the cooperative design to the Fairtrade design to adapt to the normative instruments, creating specific governance mechanisms to avoid the loss of legitimacy.
