- Abstract
This paper presents a case study on "infant mortality" in a major Colombian mining district in the early 19th century. Local and rural aspects are examined without sacrificing the analysis in the national and the international levels, since this issue emerged in the international and Colombian medical fields at the same time as a new responsiveness towards infancy was expanding and consolidating itself. Affiliations, sources and theoretical tools used by Colombian physicians to treat infancy at the time fit in a wide international movement, which was a scientific, political, economic and demographic movement all at once. The analysis of a particular case, from Titiribí Municipality Records, illustrates the local and regional dimensions of infant mortality, while contributing to public health historiography in Colombian rural areas.
