- Authors
Kramer, William M.
- Abstract
The article features journalist Manuel Mordecai Noah. He was a Sephardic Jew who arrived in California in the 1850s. He held editorship positions in various newspapers including the "Daily Evening Argus" in 1858, the "San Francisco Call" in 1860, and the "Alta California" in 1862. According to the article, Noah's writings spoke against the anti-Christian doctrines that promote prejudice against the Jews, and he became deeply involved in Jewish protest against the "Mortara Abduction" case in 1859. Noah was also an active member of B'nai B'rith Pacific Lodge, and a supporter of the Odd Fellows and the Mercantile Library Association of San Francisco. Noah died at the age of 44.
