- Title
Theoretisches und praktiziertes Sampling. K. Schittenhelm: Theoretisches und praktiziertes Sampling ZQF Heft 2/2021, S. 283-298 Zwischen Felderkundung, Theoriebildung und Gütesicherung.
- Abstract
Having been widely applied beyond Grounded Theory based studies theoretical samplings are often used in interpretive and reconstructive procedures. In this context, however, they are not similarly discussed in terms of methodological issues or sampling practices. The article calls into question whether there are common grounds to evaluate theoretical samplings beyond the specifics of research fields and methods. The analysis starts with discussing qualitative samplings in terms of key fields of action in qualitative studies. In doing so, it highlights how challenges of theoretical samplings occur during interdependencies between fieldwork, theory building and quality assessment. Based on an own study, the article discusses how researchers' fieldwork results in revisions of their criteria for data selection and of their analytical perspectives, along with the consequences for a quality assessment. The quality of a sample is understood in terms of the product and the process of producing the sample.
