- Abstract
Historical scholarship on Finally Got the News (1970) has prioritized the production of the film, in large part at the cost of its subsequent circulation as a filmic text and political document. However, in emphasizing production, such histories neglect the tedious and no less contentious process of distributing the film through the auspices of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers' limited resources. This Dossier provides an account of Black Star Productions, the filmmaking arm of the League, and its efforts to distribute Finally Got the News to institutional and noncommercial venues alike. Black Star is also considered beyond its relation to Finally Got the News as a short-lived independent production and distribution unit. This account is buttressed by the reproduction of historical materials relevant to the production, exhibition, and distribution of Finally Got the News and to the inner workings of Black Star Productions.
