- Abstract
The article looks at queer theorist Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and the concept of attention, noting how her work connects attention to something, such as poetry, with companionship and self-companionship. The author traces her use of the word in articles she wrote about author Marcel Proust, and how the themes of attention and companionship appear in her dissertation "The Coherence of Gothic Conventions." The influence of the poet James Merrill on Sedgwick's work is noted, with a mention of her essay "The 1001 Seances," about his poem "The Book of Ephraim."
