- Title
Structural tightness, autonomy, and observability: an analysis of Hutterite conformity and orderliness.
- Authors

- Abstract
Current explanations of Hutterite conventionality emphasize their socialization practices which are said to result in deeply internalized norms and values as well as a highly developed desire for the approval of others. This paper challenges such an oversocialized conception of Hutterites and proposes an alternate approach focussing on the structural tightness of Hutterite society and the resultant restriction of individual autonomy. Structural tightness is conceptualized as one dimension of role relatedness, namely the degree to which role expectations are "imposed and received" rather than "proposed and interpreted." Reduced autonomy in turn, coupled with conditions of heightened observability, gives rise to a particular mode of conformity termed doctrinal conformity.
