- Abstract
This study, involved with the Digital Humanities discipline, deals with demonstrating the value of the new technologies applied to the lexical-terminological research in History of Art. We digitalize and analyze two texts from the XVI Century, which describe the image of the Royal Monastery of The Escorial: Laurentina (ca. 1580) by Luis Cabrera de Córdoba and the Octava Maravilla del Mundo (ca.1595) by Juan Alonso de Almela. Using a frequency of words analysis in the virtual platform Prototype of Text Analysis Tools (TAPOR), the most repeated esthetic words were identified in each text, among which "curioso" and "artificio" were commonly used by both authors. Then, the semantic meaning of these two terms was studied in both texts by word concordance and word co-ocurrence analysis tools. Finally, to elucidate the original contribution of these authors, the popular meaning of "curioso" and "artificio" were examined in the XVI and XIX centuries by using the Corpus Diacrónico Español (CORDE). This research highlights the usefulness of the digital approaches in the historicalartistic field, where they greatly improve the information search an accessibility and, moreover, they provide new analysis tools that yield novel results.
