- Abstract
This essay relates the story of the 1889 boxing match between John L. Sullivan, known as a rough and tough bare-knuckle boxer, and up-and-coming fighter Jake Kilrain which employed the London Prize Ring rules in bare-fist fighting, the last of this type in U.S. boxing history. Topics covered include role of the media in making Sullivan the first U.S. sports hero, coverage of prizefighting by "The National Police Gazette," owned by Richard Kyle Fox, and impact of Fox on Sullivan's career.
