- Abstract
Sarah Burdett's book, "The Arms-Bearing Woman and British Theatre in the Age of Revolution, 1789–1815," explores the portrayal of women carrying weapons on the British stage during the French Revolution. Burdett argues that the depiction of these armed women was a response to the mass participation of French women in the revolution. The book examines various plays and their representation of armed women, including Elizabeth Inchbald's "Next Door Neighbours" and "The Massacre," as well as Shakespearean characters Lady Macbeth and Margaret of Anjou. Burdett also discusses the portrayal of armed women in German Romantic drama and Spanish resistance to French occupation. The book concludes by noting the disappearance of the armed woman from the stage by 1830, but acknowledges her presence in later Victorian literature.
