- Abstract
This article reports on the evaluation of the trends in phonology. One major convergence in recent generative phonology is the division of phonological rules into at least two different main types: abstract or morphophonemic as against concrete or phonetic or allophonic rules, sometimes called processes. It should be pointed out from the outset that this dividing line falls within phonology as opposed to phonetics, i.e. it is not identical to the distinction between phonological rules proper and phonetic detail rules.
