- Title
“The Holy Spark”: Martin Buber and New Jewish Learning.
- Authors
Levine, Judah
- Abstract
The article discusses the way in which the concept of Jewish learning informed the thought of Jewish philosopher Martin Buber regarding secularized Jewish renewal, philosophy of dialogue, and philosophy of education, as well as his personal engagement with biblical scholarship and Zionism. The author explains how Buber's embrace of Jewish text study was a reaction against a shift in German-Jewish identity in the early-20th century as acculturated Jews also became alienated from German life. Buber's belief in the importance of Jewish community and engagement with the Jewish canon to the development of religiosity is examined.
