- Abstract
The article looks at the roles of women in Chinese history and society. It references data from biographical dictionaries of Chinese women. Details on the structure of traditional patrilineal Chinese society are presented. Particular focus is given to inequalities between men and women, which the author argues had their origins in philosophical movements such as Confucianism and religious traditions such as ancestor worship. Topics discussed include sex segregation, nuns, courtesans, and family relationships.
