- Abstract
This paper traces the roots of the US policy toward Japan's conservative parties at the beginning of the Occupation. Although the Occupation planners formed a heterogeneous group split into several factions according to views of postwar Japan, the planners were not divided by questions concerning the prewar and wartime Japanese conservatives and these conservatives' predicted postwar role. Despite various structural and ideological changes in both the planning machinery and the general policy line, continuity was the most prominent feature in the development of America's approach to Japan's conservative parties.
