- Authors

- Abstract
In 1997, a hundred-year-old quilt, located in a historic cottage on the Isle of Man, was seriously deteriorating and needed protection by being moved to the Manx Museum. In order to aid in its preservation and maintain the authenticity of an important symbol of Manx cultural heritage, people on the Isle of Man joined together to create a replica to take its place in the cottage. Both this process and the original creation of the quilt were studied in terms of Swidler’s conceptualization of Cultures in Action. Although a hundred years apart, both processes offer interesting insights into differing ways in which individuals use the tools provided for them by their culture to solve problems and meet challenges.
