- Abstract
The article discusses the author's literacy program which introduces African American students' and their families to African American children's literature. Topics include developing literacy through read-alouds, the importance of children's images in books, and the Call Me Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models (MISTER) literacy project. Several books are recommended, including "Clean Your Room, Harvey Moon!," "One Hot Summer Day", and "Tar Beach."
