- Title
Smallwood, Churchill Falls, and the Power Corridor through Quebec.
- Authors
Feehan, James P.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the history of the electric power transmissions generated at the Churchill Falls Generating Station in Newfoundland owned by the British Newfoundland Corporation (Brinco). It focuses on the Canadian government's political maneuverings between the provinces of Newfoundland and Quebec in negotiating contracts for Canada's power grid in the 1960s and the government's decision to sell electricity to the U.S. It reports that Canadian Prime Minister Lester Pearson requested that Newfoundland Premier J.R. (Joey) Smallwood accept unfavorable terms to assuage Quebec Premier Jean Lesage and avoid national ethnic issues posed by the Quiet Revolution of the Québécois.
