- Title
GENDERED RECEPTION: THERE AND BACK AGAIN.
- Authors
Gohari, Sybil E.
- Abstract
The article discusses the critical reception of artist Helen Frankenthaler. Particular focus is given to the ways in which gendered stereotypes negatively influenced critics' views of her work. According to the author, critics' analyses of Frankenthaler's nonfigurative paintings did not acknowledge her innovations and contributions to avant-garde art. Details on her relationship to the work of artist Jackson Pollock are presented. Other topics include Abstract Expressionism, Color-Field art, and the soak-stain painting technique developed by Frankenthaler.
