- Abstract
This review of the status of the Le Conte's free-tailed bat in Tennessee and surrounding states arose because two specimens were collected in Montgomery County, Tennessee, the first 19 March 1991 and the other 3 December 2007. Data were collected on the species' known range and distribution in adjacent states, and then placed into a Geographic Information System database. Distribution data and recent record data were compared to suggested distributions from various sources. Current distributions for this species as suggested by several sources, including the United States Geological Survey and NatureServe, are conflicting. The mapping and record data indicate that previous records had a sporadic pattern when compared with known distributions. The recently reviewed record data collected by our study and many personal communications suggest that little is known about the distribution of this species throughout the Southeastern United States. Our review of existing data suggests that the range for the species could be extended northward and that its range should be further reviewed.
