- Abstract
Compared to European companies, US companies responded slowly to the call of then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to adhere to international values and norms and create a more inclusive global economy by committing to the Global Compact's ten principles in the area of human rights, labour standards, environment and anticorruption. Only after the launch of the Global Compact Network USA, did US companies start to increase their participation. Today, there are around 300 businesses and 250 non-businesses from the US committed to the Global Compact's principles. The business participants have to submit a Communication On Progress (COP) each year in which they report on the implementation of the ten principles in their operations. This article analyses those reports, news articles, and interviews with businesses, non-profits, academia and United Nations to identify best practices, challenges and their solutions as well as open questions and unresolved issues.
