- Abstract
The article presents an examination into the themes of suffering and justice depicted in Fyodor Dostoevsky's Russian novel "Notes From the House of the Dead." The "problem of pain" is then analyzed through the story's frequent transitions between fictional and nonfictional genres, including autobiography as witness to pain, literary novel showing multiple stories in a social context, and essay assessing responsibility and issues of justice.
