- Abstract
The renewed popularity of Baroque music has been a clearly visible trend in Western cultures ever since the mid-nineteenth century. This revival is apparent in various works of fiction and not only shows that writers have been inspired by Baroque music, but that they continue to shape the contours of its appeal. My study of two novels by Nancy Huston demonstrates that musical compositions of a revived historical era can be made to contribute elements of their medium's specificity to a literary work, and that they may also be brought to resonate with contemporary issues of culture, power, class, and gender. In this way, we see the novels as literary mediations of Baroque music, an interface between music and literature, between the past and the present.
