- Authors

- Abstract
The article discusses an 1895 writing contest sponsored by the newspaper the "New York Herald," of which author Julian Hawthorne was declared the winner. The author argues that the prize, which offered a 10,000 dollar prize, was fixed in Hawthorne's favor. Details related to Hawthorne's personal relationships with several of the judges, including periodical editors Joseph M. Stoddart, George Parsons Lathrop, and Mayo Hazeltine, are presented. Other topics include Hawthorne's friend and agent Lorenz Reich, Hawthorne's novel "Between Two Fires," and Hawthorne's descriptions of the contest in his personal correspondence.
