AUSTIN, NORMAN
- Abstract
A literary criticism of the epic poems "Iliad" and "Odyssey" are presented. The article comments on the concept of nostalgia in Homeric poetry. Nostalgia is described as a bittersweet feeling or grief for time passed. Examples of nostalgia are presented, including in "Iliad" where Aeneas watches the city of Troy burn, and later sees it inscribed on temple walls and Odysseus' quest to return home in "Odyssey". The concepts of kleos (glory) and nostos (homecoming) are also discussed.
