- Abstract
Elizabeth Cook-Lynn's memoir, "In Defense of Loose Translations: An Indian Life in an Academic World," offers valuable insights into the concerns of Indigenous scholarship. Cook-Lynn criticizes the colonial influence in American literary traditions, which misrepresent Indigenous history, politics, and cultures. She emphasizes the responsibility of Indigenous scholars to reconstruct the lost Indian past and fight against the colonial academe. The memoir also addresses the historical oppression of Indigenous nations, the deliberate misrepresentation of Indigenous authors, and the need for Indigenous scholars to work towards sovereignty and reclaim their stolen land. Overall, the memoir serves as a wake-up call for Indigenous authors and researchers and provides a valuable resource for those new to Native/Indigenous studies.
