- Authors
McDonald, M.
- Abstract
The article presents an analysis of the work of South African playwright Athol Fugard and his reworking of themes and stories from the classics of ancient Greece. Fugard drew from the tragedies of Sophocles, Aeschylus, and other classical writers to craft his own works of protest against the Apartheid government of South Africa. Several Fugard plays are discussed, including "Orestes," "The Island," "Dimetos," and others.
