On the aggregation of individual withdrawal behaviors into larger multi-item constructs.

- Abstract
Researchers have long shown considerable interest in the related physical withdrawal behaviors of lateness, absence and turnover, although empirical evidence has not consistently supported a progression between them. Conceptual models have typically emphasized describing, explaining and predicting each behavior separately. This conceptual focus on specific individual behaviors has, to some extent, carried over into corresponding empirical research, for example, lateness, absence and turnover. However, the amount of variance explained in each behavior has often been disappointing. It has been noted that these weaker results can be partly attributed to such data-related issues as skewed distributions, measure unreliability, and varying base rates of the behaviors. Recent efforts to better account for such factors has helped to increase understanding of lateness, absence and turnover. However, research utilizing more general, i.e., multi-behavioral withdrawal constructs, can provide for greater understanding. This article will argue for a modified approach to the use of multi-item withdrawal behavior constructs, based more closely on the construct validity of component withdrawal behavior and more recent research findings.
